Elements of Sound (Unit 16: P1,P2)

P1 (U16): Explain how different sound elements are used

Sound in Film
Case Study - Ratatouille (2007)

From watching this video I can see that how the sounds in Ratatouille were made. Side by side the video of the animation and the behind the scenes are played at the same time. I can see that at 29 seconds the omelette gets thrown out the window and to make the sound of the window smashing they had a bunch of keys and they hit it so they jingles to make the smashing sound. Another sound that was made was at 38 seconds in the video where they are whisking they use their mouths in order to make the sound of a liquid being whisked. This makes the sound more prominent in the scene and by using items that will sound similar to what they are.

In animation most sounds are made through voice overs and foley. This is so they can make the sounds prominent and sound realistic to what is going on in the frame.  From this video I can now interpret how some of the sound is made. An example of this is when Remy falls onto the floor (1:38) and his body slaps against it. This would be done by someone using their hand and slapping it against an item such as a full sand bag. This brings the animation to life and makes the sounds realistic in order to sound as if it were happening. Disney also use voice overs to create the voices of the characters. This is done by having the actors stand in the booth and read from the script while the film is playing for them so they get the right timing to do the speech.

Case study- A Quiet Place

Here are the foley sounds used in the movie a quiet place as seen in the clip they use vegetables to make the sound of the monsters ear opening when they hears a sound. From this video they explained that to make the sound of the monster moving around without seeing they put a taser to a bunch of grapes this is then later edited into the film to create the vision that they are walking around without seeing.

As shown above here are the two pictures of the foley artists creating the sounds of the monster. They used crab legs to make the realistic sound of what the monster would sound like and then they will edit them in at appropriate places in order to  to make the monster move so they are in sync. They will use foley on this movie as monsters aren't real so when creating the sounds thy need something that would sound similar to a monster so they will find different objects that would make a monster sound hence the twisting of the lettuce and celery.

Case study- Mortal Kombat

Foley sound is also used in video games such as call of duty, GTA and mortal Kombat. In the video it is showing the behind the scenes of the sounds in mortal Kombat. Foley is used to create the sounds of people being beaten up and killed but without actually hurting or killing anyone. Using different objects as shown at 2:34 in the video they will stand in.a booth using items such as cracking a walnut to sound like bones cracking and then editing it in at the correct time so when someone's punched it will send more grousome. In the video they also used a pepper and started squishing it so it created a sound that was similar to someone being stabbed  and the bananas are used to make disgusting grousome sounds added to the video game.

As shown in these three videos Foley is used in many different ways to create different sounds such as in horror films to create a monster or in a video game to create stabbing sounds and in an animation to make it come to life. It makes non diegetic sound more prominant and sound like it is diegetic sound.

P2 (U16): Describe how the sound elements are produced

In my Foley sound I made it sound like an autumn walk. I used a microphone and went round recording myself making sounds that were similar to an autumn walk. Firstly I went outside and recorded the wind blowing to get the cold atmosphere`. I then continued to walk along the path to get the footsteps in and I over laid that sound to make it sound like two people were walking on the path to get footsteps at different times. I also walked on some leaves to show that its autumn and the sound of leaves crunching under our feet to get the imagination of the leaves have fallen off the trees and are covering the path. I also used voice over dialogue in the sound I produced. This also gives the listener the understanding that two people are there. The two people say "its really chilly" and "Yeah I should have brought my coat. This then gives the understanding of how the characters are feeling in this setting and what they are thinking. In the background I put a song. This sets the mood of the scene. The song I used is called autumn by van Morris. This creates the scene to show its calming and romantic atmosphere between these two charecters. Music is important as its non-diegetic sound and even though its not playing during the world the characters are in it sets the mood for the audience therefore they have a clear understanding of how the characters are feeling. More foley work I used was me shaking some branches together to get the sound of the trees blowing once again showing the autumn atmosphere to the listeners.
