News markets and Platforms (Unit 7: P1,P2,M1)

P1 (U7): Explain the media market for different news providers

News can be distributed in many different ways such as traditionally and digitally. Below I have created a mind map that shows the different ways news can be distributed and examples of distribution methods such as print, TV, Radio and online.

News/press agencies e.g.
These gather news stories and photographs and sell them to news institutions.
Examples:
Associated Press- an American not-for-profit news agency headquartered in New York
Reuters-a publicly owned international news and information company

P2 (U7): Explain the media platforms used for news distribution

Daily Mail Online

BBC Online

Above are images of the same news story being distributed traditionally and digitally. The story is about the Streatham terrorist named Sudesh Amman, who carried out a terror attack in South London and was caught by the police and shot dead.

The incident happened on February 2nd 2020 and was widely reported across a full range of platforms, from traditional print newspapers to online platforms and apps. Citizen journalism played a major role, as the attack was filmed by a number of bystanders who witnesses the event. These made their way on to most of the major platforms via social media.

The first and second images are from the Daily Mail's website and the BBC news' website. These are distributed digitally. One of the benefits of digital platforms over print is that the news can be relayed to audiences through different mediums. For example, in the screenshot below, which is taken from the Daily Mail's website, embedded video footage of the attack has been posted. Across the article, there are multiple videos, taken from different angles and sourced from different citizen journalists, as well as photographs. In this way, the news is no longer just written articles, but a multi-media experience.

Most papers also have a social media account of some form or another. For example, The Telegraph has its own Twitter feed.

The Telegraph Twitter page

The Telegraph Twitter page

This means the reporting of the news stories target different audiences such as the websites targeting adults who are middle aged and Twitter targeting teenagers and younger adults,  so everyone knows what the current affairs are and can access them easily. The fact the story is presented in different lights on different news articles shows it being tailored to how you were brought up eg: your age and class. As well as this story being presented digitally it is also presented traditionally through print, radio and TV.
The Times newspaper

As shown in the image above, this was on the front page of The Times meaning it was a breaking news story and they put it there with a bold headline to grab people's attention when seeing it in shops.  This is the way the news can target older adults who were brought up when news would only be shown through newspapers and radio.

Daily Mirror

The image above was of the same story but from a print tabloid - The Daily Mirror. Headlines on tabloids tend to use more sensationalist language, stoking people's fears of crime and terrorism. There is limited text on the cover. Instead, the terrorist's face is displayed prominently, with a headline in large sans-serif font. Stand firsts are also included beneath, which again use language aimed at stirring up public feeling.

From the Today programme, BBC Radio 4

Nowadays radio has changed from tune in to DAB but it still targets older adults as radio station such as BBC Radio 4 would be for the middle age and upwards demographic.

On the Radio this story would have been reported on the hour each hour and they would have said a "headline" about what has happened to attract the attention of the listeners. One of the major sources of radio news is BBC Radio 4. The Today programme has been running for a number of years, and broadcasts news between 6 and 9am during weekdays. It is a very in-depth form of reporting, with news headlines plus interviews and analysis of major news stories. This story was one of the main headlines on Monday morning, a day after it happened, with reporting covering not only the attack, but also the aftermath. Politicians were interviewed with their thoughts on the attack, and issues were raised regarding the release of prisoners who have been charged with terror offences.

M1 (U7):  Compare and contrast the benefits of using different media platforms
Telegraph Twitter
Telegraph Twitter

A benefit of distributing this story digitally is that the news gets spread quickly and more effectively. As seen from the screenshots, this news story was distributed on Twitter on the Telegraph's page. Social media is constantly updating feed so new stories appear each minute. People can then share the post or retweet leading to people who follow them seeing it therefore they will know what is happening at each point of the story so they are informed by it. This is a benefit because it reaches the younger end of target audience, this being the teenagers and young adults who constantly use social media, meaning they will see it quickly and from these images showing the twitter page they updated within 2 hours of each other therefore catching the attention of the teenagers/ young adults target audience.

Also when distributing this story about the Streatham stabbings a flash alert pops up on the news section of iPhone As shown in the image bellow. This will gain the attention of all people on their phones and is a benefit because it grabs people's attention with a catchy headline therefore making people want to read it. The way it's distributed is beneficial to the news company because people are constantly looking at their phones so sending people a notification from the news app when an update occurs will make them want to read it more as it seems urgent.
iPhone Flash Alert

The flash alert comes through on people's phones and when clicked on it will take them to apple news. The headline will Grab the attention and seem important from the quick pop up
the alert therefore making them want to read the Article.

Another benefit of digitally distributing news stories is that it's easier to gain the information quickly. An example of this is the websites such as BBC News and the mail online. News stories will be updated with just a click of a refresh button meaning people can gain information quickly than when they would have to wait fir it to be printed each day. It is also more environmentally friendly due to the fact its not printed on so many sheets of papers therefore targeting to environmentalists which are a niche audience meaning they feel like they can Gai information quickly about what's happening in the world without effecting the environment. These are both benefits because it means people are more enticed to hear about the news because they are reading what has happened as soon as its happening meaning they get first hand information rather than day old news meaning it spreads the word around quicker. On the story of the Streatham stabbings you could get updates from news apps on what was going on at the scene of the crime as well as people posting videos on twitter of what is happening. This is called citizen journalism and its where ammeters will document news stories and post it on social media  and people will gain information from these posts. Its beneficial because it will give the point of view of what is going on right then and there at the scene of the crime.

A benefit of  Traditional advertising such as TV would be that they can gain updates as soon as they come in due to channels such as BBC and SKY have all day news channels making it quick and effective. This lets viewers see the information when it comes in as the presenter will show the viewers what has been sent in by reporters on the scene of the crime therefore giving them up-to-date information on the scene. This type of distribution is targeted towards older adults who are retired. This is because they have all day at home and since this news is on all day they will gain all the information just from this and become their primary source of news distribution. This is a benefit when older adults watch the news is when stories such as the Streatham stabbings will inform where it is happening so they remain safe and what updates occurred during this time of the stabbings and after the stabbings.

Another benefit of Traditional advertising such as Print and radio is that it targets the elderly people because they grew up only listening to this type of news because TVs weren't invented at this time. This means they will get their news later however this could be beneficial to this type of audiences as it doesn't cause moral panic as they will get their news later through print however on radio they can get it as soon as it comes in. But receiving it later won't cause them to panic and worry about their safety where they are living.
