Researching and Planning (Unit 7: P4,M3,D1) (Unit16:P3,P4,M1)
P4 (U7): Research and plan content for an original article
For my news article I need to ensure that I fit the brief for having an article that appeals towards 16-25 year olds based on current affairs. The article I have decided to write is attitudes towards learner drivers on the road. I feel like this will tick the box of the brief due to the fact people are always starting lessons at the age of 17 or getting their provisional licence at 16. Driving can happen at any age you want so it means it will fit one end of the target audience as well as the other. In my article I will be planning on interviewing a learner driver as well as an instructor so the readers have an understanding of how a learner feels on the road as well as how an instructor feels towards impatient people. To start of I will do some surveys to see if I can get an understanding of who is a learner driver and how they feel when they are on the road. This will give me a greater understanding of what people are feeling which will help me know what to write therefore I can make it entertaining for the 16-25 year old target audience. The surveys will be my primary research as I am undertaking this information for myself and diving into the minds of new drivers. For my secondary research I will look into research other people have produced such as articles that are already written or books on driving so I can get a winder understanding myself of what learner drivers are like.
Impact
The impact my Article will have on the target audience is that they will gain a wider understanding of how it feels to drive on the road and how it feels to be a learner driver. Considering people usually being to drive around the age of 17 it will appeal to those around the age of 17/18/19 however some people leave it till they finish university so it will also appeal to the 20-25 year olds. Also the 16 year olds will, look into they and if they are thinking about starting to drive at 17 they get wider knowledge of how it feels to be a learner driver from people who experienced it.
Timelines
The reason why I chose this topic to write about is because it is relevant in this day and age due to the fact someone is always learning to drive therefore it will fit the target audience of 16-25 year olds as they are usually thinking about learning, passed or learning.
Prominence
Many people will have had the same experiences as the people I have interviewed so they will feel connected to the article and will want to read on so they can see that they aren't the only ones experience it. It allows readers to relate to the article and hopefully personally identify with it.
Bizarreness
Many people may not realise that this is going on therefore the article is bizarre and may be funny to them however it will give them a clearer understanding about how they are feeling.
Conflict
My news article doesn't contain much conflict such as war. However it may contain some verbal abuse towards learner drivers. Even though this isn't conflict going on all around the world many people will experience it when on the roads so they understand the conflict that is there between learners and actual drivers on the road.
Currency
People will tend to read this article if they are learning to drive are new to driving or thinking about driving. As you can learn at any age inclusive to all audiences and they will gain an insight in how it feels to be a learner driver.
Proximity
Driving can happen anywhere in the world so this is inclusive to everyone as majority of people learn to drive which means it relates to everyone wherever they are.

D1 (U7): Justify the choice of sourced information to be referenced within the article
Primary research
To start off my research I decided to ask my respondents how old they were. This gives me an understanding of who my target audience is therefore I can adapt it to them. Majority of people who answered were between the ages of 17 and 25 which is what my brief outlines is who I'm aiming this at. This means I can get a better understanding of how they feel about this topic.
The second question I asked was if they are learning to drive or thinking about it. Majority of people had either already passed or are learning which means both these groups get a wider understanding that other people have gone through the same issues as they have had. This will intrigue these two groups as they are either going through it or have been through the abuse learner drivers receive.
A vast majority of people said they would be interested in an article and a podcast about attitudes towards learner drivers on the road. This means that I know exactly who my target audience is (17-25 year olds who can drive or who are learning to drive). I will then need to adapt my language to suit that audience.
Here I asked if they had had any bad experiences whilst learning. The people who could drive said that whilst they were learning people used to shout abuse at them from the cars and people would be very impatient and overtake them which leads to their confidence being knocked. From this I can gather their stories and can use them in my article.
As shown in this question the vast majority of people can all agree that learner drivers can get their confidence knocked by people acting stupid around them on the road. This means everyone reading this article will agree on one thing which means the readers have something in common.
My primary research was reliable and effective. This is because I asked question which will help with my research so I as the writer can get a clearer understanding of what my audience of 17-25 year olds want therefore I can adapt my research to what they want. Its reliable because I asked people from a wide range of audience which means I was given different responses and therefore I get a wide range of answers which means my research isn't corrupt.
My primary research is also valid because I asked people around the ages of when they start driving to answer my survey and because I asked different ages it means I get a wider response when I look at the answers meaning my research won't lean only to one side of the target audience and will cater to all.
My research was accessible and I sent the link around so people could easily click on it answer the questions then send the link on so more people can access it.
My research was good quality because I asked questions that were relevant to what my article was about so I could have a deeper understanding on how they are feeling about the subject.
My primary research was cost effective because I used survey monkey which was free therefore I didn't need to spend money on my research in order to find out people opinions.

P3 (U16): Develop ideas for sound elements for identified media purpose
As shown above here are some of the sound elements I will use during my podcast. To start off I will make a jingle to introduce to show. The jingle will be upbeat and from this it will attract more attention from the target audience as the story is upbeat and isn't a depressing topic to talk about. I will also end the podcast with the same jingle in order to keep it continuous and this will raise our podcasts brand awareness. The car sounds such as the horn beeping the car moving off and the car reving all relate to the story as they are. noises the learners will be familiar with therefore if I place them in quietly It adds an atmosphere to the podcast and it keeps the understanding of the topic. The voice over will be me and the people im interviewing. I will have a range of an instructor, a learner and someone who's passed so I can gain a wide range of opinions.

Secondary research
From these two videos it shows the impatient drivers and how abusive they can be towards learners. From the first video we can see the shock and horror on the learners face when he's getting tailgated and hooted at. And from the second video we can see an impatient driver swearing and overtaking this learner. This is why I want to create the article to raise awareness about this as it knocks young peoples confidence on the road so the more people that are aware of this the more we can start having penalties and charges for people who do this as its disrespectful.
Here we have an article from https://www.express.co.uk/life-style/cars/1188382/road-rage-dangerous-driving-lessons-learner-drivers-car . As shown in the article it states the ages that are the most supportive towards learner drivers which is 17-24 year olds. This is exactly my target audience whereas the people who were abusive were 25-40 year olds. These p[people forget that they were once learners themselves and from this they are rude and do anything they can to knock the confidence of learner drivers such as tailgating and overtaking them. At the end of this section they wrote that we should be treated the same as we were all once learners which is what my article will raise awareness about which shows other people are worried about the situation of learners on the road.

These statistics shows the abuse that learners get on the road. The article states that marmalade insurance who are trying to fight back at abuse towards learner drivers did a survey on 610 driving instructors on how much abuse their students get on the road. 91% of learners have people over taking them. This knocks their confidence as they feel they need to drive quicker which may be dangerous for then. 77% of driving instructors regularly experience abuse and 31% get it on a daily basis. 90% are tailgating learners. This knocks their confidence because they are scared about rolling back therefore they will panic leading them to stall in places such as traffic lights and then drivers get even more angry at them. 66% receive hand gestures which knocks their concentration on the road as they are worried what other drivers are thinking. Finally 49% have experienced verbal abuse which once again will knock their confidence and scare learners into thinking they aren't good enough to be on the roads therefore they will panic and stall.
My secondary research was reliable and relevant because it came from driving school websites as well as having information from the insurance company marmalade. This is relevant and reliable as they have seen what it is like on the roads as a driving school therefore are seeing it for themselves and passing it on to explain to others what it is like.
My research was accurate because it seems like everyone is telling the same stories of drivers on the road so by watching videos and reading articles is accurate because it shows what its actually like on the roads from driving schools therefore its accurate as they experience it everyday.
My research was valid as it gave me a deeper understanding of how learners are treated on the roads therefore t gives me more to write about in my article.
My research was accessible because I could easily type it in on google and get my answer for what I searched. I looked through my results and these links seemed the most reliable so I picked them.
The quality of my results were good because it gave me exactly the answers I wanted therefore I got a deeper understanding of how learners feel on the road whilst in lessons.
The research was cost effective as it was free meaning no charge to me and I will therefore have more money to spend on my article.
P4 (U16): Generate planning materials for the intended production of sound elements
Considerations
For my article I will be considering doing an interview with three people. One will be a driving instructor, One will be someone who has passed and another is someone learning. This means I get all aspects of people that are around learners because our information will then be more reliable and we see it from different points of view.
Short recordings
Script
Materials
The materials I will be using include a microphone so I can record my podcast to get good sound quality therefore people will be able to hear it clearly. I will also need to have a car in order to film my foley sounds of a car horn, the car revving and the car moving off.
Locations:
I will be filming my podcast in a house in a quiet room. This is so I can ensure that my guests are comfortable as well as making sure that my audience will be able to hear them all loudly and clearly. This is an advantage for my listeners because it means that the podcast will be in good quality therefore they can hear it at the best. Also by recording it In a comfortable zone the guests are more likely to open up about how their experience was due to the fact they are in a comfortable 'at home' surrounding. I will only be using this location because we are taking it with the guests all together as I feel it makes the podcast smoother that having cuts which may make the podcast seem unprofessional and people may feel its not smooth and will tune out.
Equipment
Here is the equipment I will be using:
- Boom Microphone- This is going to be used to capture my foley sounds such as a car moving off, the car horn beeping, the car revving. This is so I can add atmosphere to my podcast in order to make it more exciting.
- Microphone- This is so I can record my voiceovers for my podcast. This is so people can hear my speakers loudly and clearly so the audience can understand what they are saying and so it comes out in better quality therefore more people are likely to listen the day after.
- A car- This is so I can create sound effects through foley work in order to add atmosphere and to make the podcast more exciting to the audience as there will be other sounds in there and not just talking.
M1 (U16): Identify resolutions to the legal and ethical issues for production
Data Protection act- When people subscribe to our podcast and sign up using their email we will protect their data by not sharing it out to a third party. This means our audience will trust us more therefore they are more likely to continue listening each time we create a podcast.
Copyright- When creating our podcast we need to ensure that if we use any secondary sources we must reference them as otherwise we would be acting unlawful and the companies/ twitters who wrote this could sue us if we don't as its under their name in the copyright. To prevent this I will source all information I use that isn't my own.
Equal opportunities- We need to ensure that we give guests on our show equal opportunities so we don't discriminate against anyone. This will make people feel included therefore they are more likely to listen to our podcast and as we aren't discriminating.
Ethical
Racism- We must ensure that the language we use cannot be racist as this would be discriminating and we don't want people to feel that they can't listen to our podcast because of their skin colour. This means we will not be racist and ensure everyone is included.
Under 18s- In my article I would need to ensure that if I use people who are under 18 I would need to get permission from their parents if I use pictures of them or if I write quotes from them that it is checked with their parents that it is alright to use them first. If we don't do this it could lead to parents suing me as its unethical to use their children without their permission.
Sexism- I need to ensure that I am not discriminating against any Gender and ensure that they are all feeling included. If we were sexist people will tend to not listen as this is un-ethical and we wouldn't be conforming to the equal opportunities act therefore we would be also acting unlawfully and people wouldn't tune into our podcast.
